Streamer Guide

Rotten Chamber is built to be played on stream. Streamer Mode makes room for your webcam and your chat, background music starts muted to keep your VODs clear of false copyright claims, and chat voting lets viewers point at the official they suspect while the call stays yours.

Streamer Mode

Open Settings > Streamer and tick Streamer Mode (Beta). You can switch it on or off at any time, even in the middle of a case: the table rearranges itself on the spot and your progress is untouched.

  • A column for your stream. The council table moves left and a column opens on the right. It holds the investigation log, the chat vote panel and a space for your webcam, so your overlay never covers a card or a statement.
  • Background audio off. Turning Streamer Mode on sets Music and Ambient to zero. Sound effects stay on. Turning Streamer Mode off later does not bring them back. See Music and Copyright Claims for why and how to turn them on.
  • Codes stay off screen. Sign-in codes for chat voting are hidden while Streamer Mode is on.
  • Creator Mode for multiplayer. Lobbies you create start with Creator Mode ticked: shared level starts, a hidden lobby code and kick, ban and rematch controls for matches with your viewers. Still in development.
  • Streamer Mode is available in the Windows and Mac versions. The browser version does not have it.
Camera area options (Settings > Streamer > Camera area)
Option What you get
Show placeholderA framed 16:9 space in the bottom right corner. Line your webcam overlay up with the frame.
Keep space, no placeholderThe same space, left blank. Use this if your camera is not 16:9 or you want to place it yourself.
OffNo camera space. The investigation log and chat votes take the full column.

Music and Copyright Claims

Every piece of music in Rotten Chamber is released under a free license: CC0 (public domain) or the Pixabay Content License. You are allowed to stream and monetize it. Even so, Music and Ambient start at zero when Streamer Mode is turned on. This is a precaution, not a restriction.

Automated systems such as YouTube Content ID sometimes match generic ambient music to tracks that a third party registered, even when the music in your video is a different, freely licensed piece. We have seen this happen with our own soundtrack: claims arrived for tracks that were never in the game. Starting muted keeps your VODs clean by default. Turning the music on is your choice.

If you get a claimDispute it. The track list below links the source page and license of every piece; use them as supporting documents in your dispute. If a claim does not go away, email [email protected] with the video link and the claimed track name. We keep a record of where each track came from and will send you what you need.

Game goes silent when you click away?Mute when unfocused in Settings > Sound is on by default. It silences the game as soon as you click into OBS, your chat or any other window. Turn it off for streaming.

Music Credits

None of these licenses require credit. If you want to credit the composers in your stream or video description anyway, they will appreciate it.

Your Community at the Table

Portrait sets let you replace the officials' faces with your own pictures and give each one a name, so your viewers or your mods can sit on the council. Open Portraits from the main menu.

  • Ready-made sets, such as the hand-drawn portraits, can be picked right away.
  • New Set creates your own. Every role has two slots (#1 and #2), each with a normal and a corrupt portrait. Import PNG, JPEG or WebP pictures, then drag and scroll to frame the face inside the blue frame. Empty slots keep the game's own portraits.
  • Name on card is optional. The name replaces the role title on the card; the role stays in the card's tooltip.
  • Use makes a set active. It applies to every game, including the tutorial and a run already in progress.

A name belongs to a role slot, not to a side. Whoever sits in Legal Advocate #1 appears whenever that slot is dealt, and a corrupt official disguised as a Legal Advocate wears the same face and name. Make sure your community knows that being corrupt on stream is the luck of the draw, not a verdict.

Your own sets are available in the Early Access and full versions on Windows and Mac. The demo offers the ready-made sets only, and the browser version uses the game's own portraits.

Chat Voting

Chat voting is not in the demo. The demo lists it under Settings > Streamer as in development.

Every card at the table shows a seat number. Viewers vote for the seat they suspect by typing a short command in chat. Results appear in a panel on the right side of the screen while Streamer Mode is on. Cards themselves never show votes.

Chat commands (seat 3 as an example)
Command Result
!x3Votes for seat 3.
!x-3Same vote, alternative spelling.
!x 3Not counted. No space between the command and the number.
!x03Not counted. No leading zeros.
  • One vote per viewer. Typing a different seat moves the vote. Typing the same seat again changes nothing.
  • Hidden or live count. By default the breakdown stays hidden and only the total is shown, so the crowd does not steer your own reasoning. Press Show votes when you want to see it. You can switch to a live count in Settings.
  • After an arrest, earlier votes fade and count as "earlier". A viewer who still thinks the same can confirm by sending the same command again.
  • New table, fresh start. Votes reset at every new table. Your own messages as the broadcaster are not counted.
  • Votes for arrested officials or for seat numbers that are not at the table are ignored.
  • When the case ends, voting closes and the last result stays on screen.
  • Votes are cleared when you return to the main menu, load a saved run, change the connection or chat source, or turn chat voting off. Pausing does not clear them, but going to the menu and pressing Continue starts the table with no votes.
  • Chat voting works in the campaign, Custom Game and Endless. It is off in multiplayer and the tutorial.

Choose a Connection

Open Settings > Streamer, turn on Streamer Mode, then tick Chat voting. Pick one of two connections.

Connection options
Twitch (direct) Streamer.bot
PlatformsTwitchTwitch, Kick, YouTube
Extra appNoneStreamer.bot must be running
WindowsYesYes
MacYesNot supported
Sign-inOnce, with a code on twitch.tv/activateHandled inside Streamer.bot

If you only stream on Twitch, the direct connection is the simplest choice.

Twitch (Direct)

  1. In Settings > Streamer, set Connection to Twitch (direct).
  2. Press Connect Twitch. The game shows a short code.
  3. In your browser, go to twitch.tv/activate while signed in to the account you stream from, and enter the code. The button Open twitch.tv/activate opens the same page with the code filled in, if you prefer.
  4. Twitch asks you to allow Rotten Chamber to read your chat. This is the only permission the game asks for. It cannot post, moderate or change anything on your channel.
  5. Back in the game, the status line reads Connected to Twitch as your_name. Check that the name is yours.

You only do this once. The next time you start the game, it reconnects on its own. To stop, press Disconnect in the game, or remove Rotten Chamber under Twitch Settings > Connections.

Your chat does not need to be live for chat voting. It works whenever your channel's chat is open, so you can test it before going live with a second account.

Streamer.bot

Streamer.bot is a free Windows app many streamers already use. Rotten Chamber reads chat through it, which is how Kick and YouTube are supported.

  1. Download Streamer.bot from streamer.bot and install it.
  2. In Streamer.bot, connect the accounts for the platforms you stream on. Kick also needs the Kick connection on your Streamer.bot web account.
  3. Open the WebSocket server settings in Streamer.bot (Servers/Clients > WebSocket Server). Make sure the server is running and the address is 127.0.0.1. The default port is 8080; if you changed it, enter the same port in the game under Streamer.bot port.
  4. Authentication is off by default. If you turn it on, set a password there. Enter the same password in the game under WebSocket server password. Leave it empty if authentication is off.
  5. In the game, set Connection to Streamer.bot and choose your Chat source: Twitch, Kick or YouTube. Only that platform's chat is counted, even if Streamer.bot is connected to several.

The WebSocket server password lets any program on your computer control Streamer.bot, not just read chat. Treat it like a password. The game only ever asks Streamer.bot for chat events; it never runs your actions. Keep the server address at 127.0.0.1: if you open it to your network, anyone who learns the password can control Streamer.bot from another device.

Staying Safe on Stream

  • With Streamer Mode on, the Twitch code is hidden. Use Copy instead of showing it. Someone who sees the code could approve it with their own account first.
  • If the code was visible on stream, press Get a new code. The old code stops working for the game.
  • Opening twitch.tv/activate from the game puts the code in your browser's address bar. Do not capture that window on stream.
  • After connecting, check the name on the status line. If it is not your account, press Disconnect and connect again.

Privacy

  • The game reads chat only while it is running with Streamer Mode and chat voting turned on. When the game is closed, nothing is connected.
  • Only vote commands are counted. Chat messages and usernames are never saved or sent anywhere. Viewer IDs are kept only in memory, for the current table, and cleared when the next table starts or you leave it.
  • Your Twitch sign-in and your Streamer.bot password are saved in an encrypted file in the game's user folder, tied to this computer. It is not plain text, but it is not a vault either: other programs running on your computer under your account could still read it. That is why the game only stores low-privilege credentials. The Twitch sign-in can only read chat, and you can revoke it any time under Twitch Settings > Connections. The game only sends the Streamer.bot password to your own computer (127.0.0.1).
  • Rotten Chamber has no server of its own for chat voting. The game talks directly to Twitch or to Streamer.bot on your computer.

Before You Go Live

  1. Turn on Streamer Mode. If you use a webcam, leave room for it in the Camera area and line your overlay up with it.
  2. Music and ambient start muted. Turn them on only if you want them.
  3. If you use chat voting, connect it and check the status line. From a second account, send !x3 and confirm the vote shows up, then press Show votes.
  4. Make an arrest and send the same vote again to see an earlier vote being confirmed.
  5. Check readability on your stream preview: Bubble Zoom (Settings > Gameplay, in game) enlarges a statement when you hover it and its size is adjustable.
  6. Comfort settings worth a look: Reduce Flashing Effects and No Clown Mode (Gameplay) and Animated Portraits (Display).
  7. Pick your portrait set before the first case.

Recording and Monetizing

You do not need permission to stream, record, upload or monetize Rotten Chamber, and there are no spoiler restrictions. The full terms, key art and logos are in the press kit. If you cover the game, we would love to see it: [email protected].
